What is a Jigsaw worker?

Somebody who…

  • ·Supports both the child and parents  using a range of strategies.
  • ·Is a source of encouragement and motivation.
  • ·Helps children to overcome barriers to learning.
  • ·Gains the respect of the child, his/her family, the school and other agencies.
  • ·Can provide a single point of access to additional support such as activities in the local community.
  • Realises that their role is not the solution to all problems, it is part of a team effort to help those who need it

What we do

The main role of a Jigsaw worker is to break down the barriers to learning – if a child is unhappy e.g. through bereavement, separation, poor social skills, then the child is unlikely to perform to their full potential in school. This is where we come in, by spending time with the child in a quiet area ( we have an  allocated room) talking and working together to give them a feeling of well-being. Usually, we spend some time each week together, with the total length of time and sessions  depending on the child’s needs. We welcome and encourage parents to come in for a cup of tea and a chat. Building on the success of our ELSA program this new project was started in January 2008.

Our Jigsaw work supports our School learning policy

  • I can share my feelings and express them appropriately. I can cope with change. I respect the feelings of others.
  • I know what is right and wrong. I consider·others in the choices I make. I know we are all unique and special. I know there is so much to see and learn in our wonderful world
  • I listen to others. I share my ideas. I respect others and value their opinions. I can work and play happily with other children.
  • I am interested. I ask questions. I try to find answers. I learn from my mistakes.
  • I take responsibility for myself and my learning. I can chose my own materials. I can evaluate my work and plan the next step to my learning.
  • I am open minded. I can apply skills to new situations. I can use my imagination. I think of original ideas. I take risks and try out new ideas.
